New and upcoming Fiber Optic Technologies
Everyone should be familiar with the company name of Corning. Well, they have just come out with a new 1-mm gradient index (GRIN) lens. That means smaller optical components, better performance, and more flexibility. The 1mm GRIN lens is much smaller than the 1.8mm GRIN lens available now. There is a lot of technical information that could be placed here for your viewing pleasure, but I don't think knowing that the beam diameter at 1/e2 is 240 microns helps any of us.
Corning recently introduced a Raman pump laser with operating power up to 350 mW. The new laser offers the highest power available in a standard 14-pin butterfly package. This should operate cooler and in smaller packages than lasers of the past according to Corning press release.

A Breakdown of a few fibers available from Corning
There are a number of different types of fiber available, and they all serve different applications. In the Single Mode spectrum, fiber availability ranges from Vascade R1000, which would be used for high-capacity, high-data-rate, transoceanic networks and long distance undersea networks, to InfiniCor 600, which would be used for laser based LANs. Bet you never thought of undersea networks!
